The Day the Dragon Came to Frontier!

Mar 06, 14 The Day the Dragon Came to Frontier!

We had our Chinese New Year celebration in Frontier Primary School on 30 January 2014. With almost all of us, including the teachers, coming in Chinese costume, made the school looked red at one glance. The sight was indeed beautiful. My non-Chinese friends also wore Chinese New Year styled costumes too! We celebrated as one school! As the eLfs were away on duty in the morning, the teachers took over the duty of flag-raising.

In class, some of us got to decorate our classrooms with the red packets and other decorative items while the rest of them were involved in making Chinese New Year card. Not only was the decoration of the classes a fun activity for all of us, we also learnt more about the Chinese customs. Because this year is a horse year, many of the classes used the horse as theme for their classroom decoration. The school also had a best decorated class competition. Hence, there was incentive for us to decorate well.

After the classroom activities, we went to the hall for the concert. I enjoyed the Mother Tongue department skit! I was so impressed. I did not think that our teachers could act so well. They could certainly win the best actors and actress awards if they were to be involved the Mediacorp dramas! The skit taught us the many customs that we practise during the Chinese New Year period. All of us enjoyed the skit very much. At the same time, we also learnt! I guess the best learning takes place when you don’t realise that you are learning!

There were also other items such as a wushu demonstration and sing-along session. The climax of the concert was the Dragon Dance. The ‘dragon dancers’ were very skillful indeed. They managed to move the ‘dragon’ so effortlessly though I believed that it took hours of practice to reach that high standard of performance. Some of my friends got to touch it when it was slithering among us. We had great fun watching it.

Before we were dismissed, we had our photograph taken as a whole school. I could not wait to see that beautiful shot!
